A Day at Typhoon Lagoon
Much of the talk in the surfing community nowadays is about the latest surf parks, wave pools, gardens, man-made waves, or whatever else you want to call them. But let’s not forget about one of the original pioneers of wave parks. Of course I’m referring to Typhoon Lagoon in Orlando, Florida.
Coming from California I had always heard about how this wave and how it was actually kind of rippable. So when I eventually moved to Florida the opportunity presented itself to go rent it out for a morning before the whole park opened to the public. So when it did, I jumped on it!
So a couple of friends and I met there at 5am, before dark, and got settled with the rules and how things were going to work. It took a few waves to get used surfing in a freshwater pool that doesn’t float you or your board like salt water does, let alone with an incredibly shallow concrete bottom on the inside. But once I got the hang of it, it actually turned out to be a blast!
Would I recommend it? Sure. Even with newer more modern wave pools that are much better, going here with the right expectations can still be a blast.
